Glossary

This page is meant to make it easier for you to understand the content of this web site. The glossary contains both astronomical and art terms.

K

Kelvin scale: A scale of temperature where 0 degrees Kelvin is the absolute 0. In other words, when the atoms have absolutely no energy and no motion. This is a very common scale to measure temperature in astrophysics.

Kepler, Johannes (1571 - 1630): The German astronomer and mathematician who formulated the three laws of planetary motion, helping prove the heliocentric model of the solar system.

Kuiper Belt: This is sometimes considered as the second asteroid belt of the solar system. It extends from 30 to 50 AU, which means that it starts close to Neptune's orbit and reaches further away than Pluto's orbit. This is the home of shortperiod comets.
